Shane, how did you come to work with MBR Group?

I couldn’t find an Accountant who adequately met our needs. We had always had good record keeping practices and systems on a basic level but knew there was more valuable support we could use. We didn’t think we were getting value for money, and thought our old Accountant was “sleepy”.

How has that changed working with Adam and the MBR team?

It was refreshing to find an Accountant who took a personal interest in the business and the way it operated, which really enabled Adam to become a key part of our business. Of course we aim to legally minimise tax, but the role that Adam plays moved well beyond that. I use him as a personal sounding board, and he is really part of our “unofficial” board of directors, providing great value by offering clarity in the financial decision making process.

Shane, how has your role changed from when you first started working with MBR Group?

I have moved from being a hands on “technician” to a “proprietor/manager” of the business — from working IN to ON.

At our first meeting Adam and I discussed the importance of freeing up time to work ON the business, and his encouragement has assisted that transition. I now live over 3,000km from the main office, a lifestyle choice that is only possible through not being required to work IN the business daily.

What are some of the key strategies that MBR have supported?

The management reporting prepared by MBR identify how we are performing in the key areas that drive the profitability and operations of our business. The ability to have this information to assist in decision making and having Adam to review and discuss them with has been of value as we have moved and grown the business. And of course, Adam has been able to deliver a “boot up the bum” if our performance deemed it necessary.

These key drivers definitely assist the clarity of mind necessary for great decision making. We evaluate our business decisions with due consideration for the type of business dealings we want to engage in, and the margin that we expect to earn.

Having a great understanding of how the margin affects the bottom line is key to making the best decisions.

What do you see as the key advantages you have gained from working with MBR?

Erin and I have achieved great progress with our lifestyle, enabling our girls to grow in the environment we hoped. The excellent level of service provided by the MBR team ensures peace of mind and a great level of comfort in understanding the financial implications of our decision making.

We have been able to grow our business whilst providing a supportive environment for our quality team, and achieving the lifestyle goals we had set.
